Mary Did You Know

Did a new star shine on the day you were born? Did angels announce your birth? I know that nothing so spectacular happened on the day of my birth. But Jesus' birth was the most wonderous event that ever happened.
The angels spread the word of His birth to the shepherds. Why the shepherds? They were lowly people who spent more time in the company of sheep than humans. Why did they deserve to know? Because Jesus came to save everyone. The poor and the rich. He came to be the Savior of the WORLD.
And what about the star? The wisemen in the east saw that star. Why weren't Jesus' own people looking for it? They claimed to be looking for the Messiah, but they missed the most spectacular event in the world. They missed their Messiah's birth. But they wisemen came and worshipped Him and gave Him gifts.
Yes, Jesus' the awesome events surrounding Jesus' birth, showed just what an awesome Savior had entered the world. I wonder if Mary knew just what was in store for her tiny son. She just pondered the events in her heart. She was probably speechless. I would have been. The song "Mary Did You Know" puts it best I think:
Mary, did you knowThat your baby boy will one day walk on water? Did you knowThat your baby boy will save our sons and daughters? Did you know, That your baby boy has come to make you new? This child that you’ve delivered,Will soon deliver you. Mary, did you know, That your baby boy will give sight to a blind man? Did you know, That your baby boy will calm a storm with his hand? Did you know, That your baby boy has walked where angels trod? And when you kiss your little boyYou’ve kissed the face of God, Mary, did you know? The blind will see, The deaf will hear, And the dead will live again, The lame will leap, The dumb will speak, The praises of the lamb. Mary, did you know, That your baby boy is lord of all creation? Did you know, That your baby boy will one day rules the nations? Did you know, That your baby boy is heaven’s perfect lamb? This sleeping child you’re holding, Is the great I am.

These words are so powerful. I couldn't imagine giving birth to the son of God. I couldn't imagine the thoughts that must have raced through Mary's mind when that new star started shining. I can't imagine what she thought of the shepherd's description of the angel's song. But she did what we all should do. Luke 2:19 tells us, "But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart."

We should all take to heart the importance of the Christmas story. We should all remember what the Savior's birth means to us. Take some time this season to ponder these things in your heart!

Tough call. Even knowing your son is God it must have been difficult letting him go when he needed to ascend to Heaven. For a mom to see her son tortured and killed like Mel Gibson's film portrayed so well...Mary's sacrifice was what makes Jesus' death resonate with such strong emotions.
